University Health Partners of Hawaii names former Washington University medical school dean CEO

Larry Shapiro, MD, emeritus dean of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, was appointed CEO of Honolulu-based University Health Partners of Hawaii, the faculty medical practice of the Honolulu-based University of Hawaii at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Shapiro.

1. Dr. Shapiro's tenure at UHPH will begin Aug. 1.

2. He served as dean and executive vice chancellor for medical affairs at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis for 12 years before stepping down in 2015. Despite leaving his posts, he continued to serve as a faculty member at the medical school.

3. In addition to his professional work, Dr. Shapiro was named vice chair of the Council of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

4. He received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis and completed his residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
