UA-Phoenix medical school faces accreditation issues

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education warned the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix that it could face restrictions or lose its status as an independent medical school, according to an AZCentral.com report.

The medical school opened in 2007 as a branch campus of the Tucson-based UA College of Medicine. Eighty students began classes after it received preliminary accreditation in July 2012.

The Phoenix campus was seeking provisional accreditation when the LCME warned it of the accreditation standards it has failed to meet.

The LCME cited four standards the school has failed to meet, including vacant leadership positions and an admissions committee with an inadequate number of faculty members. The other standards involve issues that followed Phoenix-based Banner Health's merger with the Tucson-based University of Arizona Health Network.

The LCME's warning letter was sent in June, and the school must submit a progress report by Dec. 1. It also must demonstrate progress toward compliance by June 2016 or the LCME may take further disciplinary action.
