Two medical groups cut ties with Atrius Health

Physicians with two medical groups have voted to break away from Newton, Mass.-based Atrius Health, according to a Boston Globe report.

Reliant Medical Group and Southboro Medical Group have voted to part ways with Atrius and are now in discussion about banding together and working with other healthcare providers in central Massachusetts, according to the report.

Two other physician organizations, Dedham Medical Associates and South Shore Medical Center, are also considering whether to cut ties with Atrius, which is the state's largest alliance of physician practices. If those two organizations did part ways, Atrius would consist of the three medical groups that make up about 60 percent of the organization today.

The Boston Globe reported that anonymous healthcare industry insiders said the groups' departures and reevaluations stem from Atrius members' failure to agree on a plan for governance. This includes who would lead the new network, the role of board members and the role of physicians post-merger.
