Top 3 Biggest Barriers to Clinical Integration

Anuja Vaidya -

Most hospital executives and materials and practice area managers believe that lack of willingness on the part of physicians and providers is the biggest barrier to achieving clinical integration, according to the spring 2013 edition of "Economic Outlook," by Premier, a collaborative healthcare alliance of approximately 2,800 hospitals and 95,000 other healthcare sites.

The survey includes responses from 530 hospital C-suite executives and materials and practice area managers.

The top three biggest barriers to achieving clinical integration, according to the survey, are:

•    Physicians and other providers being unwilling — 29 percent of respondents reported this as being the biggest barrier.
•    Difficulties in implementation of cross-continuum electronic health records — 21 percent reported this as being the biggest barrier.
•    Lack of budget to create integration among providers — 16 percent reported this as being the biggest barrier.
