These 10 US medical schools received the most applications in 2016-17

The majority of U.S. medical schools on U.S. News and World Report's list of medical schools with the most applications received more than 10,000 applications for the 2016-2017 school year.

Four of the schools on U.S News and World Report's list were also among the medical schools with the lowest acceptance rates for the fall 2016 class at less than 3 percent, the report states.

Roughly 53,029 prospective students applied to medical school for the 2016-2017 school year, according to data released by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Here are the 10 U.S. medical schools that received the most applications in fall 2016.

1. Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (Erie, Pa.) — 16,187 applicants
2. Georgetown University School of Medicine (Washington, D.C.) — 14,377
3. The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (Washington, D.C.) — 12,393
4. David Geffen School of Medicine at UC Los Angeles — 12,081
5. Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia) — 11,532
6. Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (Pomona, Calif.) — 11,178
7. Jefferson Sidney Kimmel Medical College (Philadelphia) — 10,726
8. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (Providence, R.I.) — 10,672
9. Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine (Philadelphia) — 10,623
10. New York Medical College School of Medicine (Valhalla, N.Y.) — 9,978
