Texas A&M names executive vice president, provost

College Station-based Texas A&M University appointed Carol Fierke, PhD, provost and executive vice president, effective Oct. 16, according to a Texas A&M Today report.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Fierke.

1. Dr. Fierke serves as a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Medical School. She was also appointed dean of the University of Michigan Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies and vice provost for academic affairs and graduate studies for the university in 2015.

2. She was selected for the positions from a pool of 140 applicants.

3. Dr. Fierke received the American Chemical Society's Repligen Award in Chemistry of Biological Processes and the Protein Society's Emil Thomas Kaiser Award for her research on enzymes.

4. She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Northfield, Minn.-based Carleton College and received a PhD in biochemistry from Waltham, Mass.-based Brandeis University.
