Survey: More Than Half of Physician Recruiting is for Hospitals

According to the Merritt Hawkins' 2014 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives, hospital-employed settings account for 64 percent of physician and advanced practitioner searches.

The review is based on 3,158 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments Merritt Hawkins/AMN Healthcare's physician staffing companies had from April 2013 through March 2014.

On the other hand, fewer than 10 percent of Merritt Hawkins' search assignments were for settings featuring private practice, compared to more than 45 percent in 2004, exhibiting the continued decline of physicians in private practice. Additionally, solo practice represented less than 1 percent of search assignment settings for this review's timeframe — a setting that represented 20 percent in 2004.

The top most requested medical specialty within the searches was family medicine at 714 requested searches. Internal medicine was at 235 requested searches and hospitalist was at 231 requested searches.
