Survey Finds Physicians Unfamiliar With Key PPACA Components

Most physicians say they aren't familiar with significant aspects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a survey by LocumTenens.com.

The survey — which involved 479 independent physicians — found that about 56 percent of respondents were "not at all familiar" with how policies purchased from the state exchanges would affect their business. Additionally, approximately 66 percent were unfamiliar with contracted rates with payers in the exchange, and 67 percent of physicians said they weren't at all familiar with platinum, gold, silver and bronze plan benefits.

The survey also found nearly 68 percent of physicians weren't familiar with patient coverage terms under the PPACA and about 70 percent didn't have a grasp on the claims process.

Furthermore, nearly 90 percent of those surveyed said they didn't feel consumers had been adequately informed about the insurance exchanges, and only 11 percent thought their states would be ready to launch their exchanges by Oct. 1.
