Psychologists Would Gain Prescribing Power Under Illinois Bill

A bill currently in an Illinois House committee would grant psychologists limited power to prescribe medications in an attempt to help patients in parts of the state without enough physicians, WICS reported.

If the bill becomes law, psychologists could prescribe drugs like antidepressants, antipsychotics and drugs for mental illnesses, according to the report. They would be required to work with a coordinating physician and would receive training in prescription-writing privileges.

The Illinois State Medical Society is against the bill, arguing psychologists lack medical training to dispense medication safely, according to the report.
