ProMedica ventures into urgent care in Ohio

Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica opened its first urgent care/walk in clinic this month in Oregon, Ohio, and has plans to four more in the next year. The site has already seen more than 500 patients.

The next urgent care office is slated to open in October in Perrysburg, Ohio, a Toledo suburb.

"We are setting a new standard for medical care with a primary focus on providing appropriate care in the right setting that is more expedient and affordable. We also want to prevent unnecessary visits to the emergency room," Lee Hammerling, MD, CMO of ProMedica, said in a statement. "Urgent care is one of the fastest growing specialties in the medical field due to the extended hours and immediate availability. It is a trend that we expect to see increase locally and nationally."

Staffed by certified nurse practitioners, ProMedica's sites will offer services for minor emergencies and immediate medical needs, at a lower cost than the ER. Each site will also be equipped with telemedicine technology linking CNPs to ProMedica's ER clinicians and other specialists.

The urgent care locations will be open evenings, weekends and holidays.
