The Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership in Portland, Maine, has launched what it considers to be the nation's first independent statewide physician executive leadership institute.
"Medical schools have not traditionally taught physicians how to lead organizations and manage people," said James Harnar, executive director of the Hanley Center. "As we work to improve quality and do more to moderate the growth of costs, we need to be sure clinicians are effectively represented at the decision-making tables."
The Physician Executive Leadership Institute brings three-dozen physicians from Maine together six times per year for two-day session to help physicians think more strategically and across the healthcare system. The idea is to train clinicians to "think like business people," said David McDermott, MD, head of emergency services at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, one of the physicians participating in the institute.
