Physician allegedly saves woman from overdosing on Spirit Airlines flight

A Boston-area physician reportedly saved a woman who appeared to have overdosed on a Spirit Airlines flight to Minneapolis Friday, according to Boston-25 News.

Anil Punjabi, MD, a first-year fellow at Boston Medical Center, told the news station he was about to fall asleep when he heard a Spirit Airlines flight attendant shouting for medical help.

Passengers on the flight alerted crew members when a woman "began to turn grey and … slumped over" after spending a "long time" in the bathroom, the report states. Nearby passengers said the woman had no pulse.

Dr. Punjabi said he was working with another OB/GYN physician on the flight to perform mouth-to-mouth CPR when they noticed a needle tucked in the woman's bra. He told Boston-25 News the physicians, along with a nurse, EMT trainee and the crew worked to keep the woman alive for 25 minutes until the plane made an emergency landing at Buffalo (N.Y.) Niagara International Airport Friday night.

A spokesperson for the New York airport confirmed to Boston-25 News that a flight from Boston to Minneapolis made an emergency landing at the airport and a woman was taken to the hospital for an overdose.
