Nurse Practitioners are Extremely Satisfied, Survey Says

Nurse practitioners are among the most satisfied of all care providers, as 100 percent of NPs who responded to a survey indicated they had positive feelings about the profession, according to the "2013 Survey of Nurse Practitioners, Practice Trends and Perspectives" conducted by Staff Care, a company of AMN Healthcare.

Additionally, 98 percent of NPs rated their professional morale as positive, and 99 percent are optimistic about the future of their profession.

These high rates of satisfaction set NPs apart from other caregivers, who are considerably less satisfied. For example, in a recent Merritt Hawkins survey, just 32 percent of physicians said they feel positively about their profession, and only 13 percent were optimistic about the future.

"All the signs for nurse practitioners are pointing upward. Their services are in demand and their role as an integral part of the healthcare delivery team is expanding," Michelle Hoogerwerf, vice president of marketing for Staff Care's Advanced Practice Division, said in a news release. She noted physicians have seen declining reimbursements and autonomy recently, while NPs have seen the opposite as they take on more responsibilities to alleviate the physician shortage, generally leading to higher satisfaction for the nation's NPs.

Survey data is based on responses from 222 NPs.
