Number of NCQA-Recognized Medical Homes Passes 6,000

Staff -

The number of physician practices with patient-centered medical home recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance has grown from 38 when the program started in 2008 to 6,000 this month.

Now, about 15 percent of all primary care practices in the nation have NCQA recognition as a patient-centered medical home.

"The growth of PCMH recognition shows that practices are serious about providing the best kind of care for their patients," Margaret O'Kane, president of the NCQA, said in the news release. "Patients get the access, personal attention and care coordination from their primary doctor that they need and deserve."

The NCQA plans to update PCMH standards in 2014. They were last updated in 2011.
