Nebraska Medicine launches online physician rating system

Omaha-based Nebraska Medicine launched its own online physician rating system based on requests from current and former patients, according to Live Well Nebraska.

The new system includes a star-based rating for each physician along with a patient comments section. It asks patients 10 questions focused specifically on the care they received, including the degree to which the provider engaged with the patient, the patient's confidence in the provider and the clarity of the physician's words, to determine the average star rating. Patients can then make a comment about their visit.

"For most people, healthcare is still a very word-of-mouth experience," Chad Brough, Nebraska Medicine's chief experience officer, told Live Well Nebraska. "We've attempted to take that phenomenon and put it online so people can make informed choices."

Although there are websites that provide rating services to hospitals and physicians, such as HealthGrades.com and RateMDs.com, Nebraska Medicine officials say providing their own rating and review section guarantees patients are only seeing reviews by the physician's actual patients, according to the report.
