Michigan's Grand Valley State expands physician assistant program

Allendale, Mich.-based Grand Valley State University announced it the expansion of its physician assistant program to Traverse City, Mich., where 12 students will start next fall, according to Up North Live.

The university found in a study that Traverse City had the highest demand for medical providers in the state. PA employment is expected to increase 40 percent by 2022, according to the report.

The expansion makes Grand Valley's PA program the only Michigan program north of Mount Pleasant. The program is intended to improve care in northern Michigan, especially in rural areas according to the report.

In 20 years, the current Allendale-based program has graduated roughly 400 PAs who pass board certification at a rate of 98 percent.
