Mich. couple pledges $20M to Harvard Medical School

Two philanthropists — Rhonda Stryker and her husband William Johnston — have pledged $20 million to Boston-based Harvard Medical School's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine.

The Michigan couple's gift will be given over the next five years.

Ms. Stryker is the granddaughter of Homer Stryker, MD, founder of Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Stryker Corp., according to MLive.com. She is also a member of the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows and Advisory Council on Global Health and Service. Mr. Johnston is the president and chairman of Kalamazoo-based Greenleaf Trust. In addition, he's on the board of trustees for Kalamazoo-based Western Michigan University.

Their gift will not only create the Ronda Stryker and William Johnston Professorship in Global Health, but will also support HMS research in HIV and give students the opportunity to enroll in HMS' Master of Sciences in Global Health Delivery program, among other initiatives.

"I believe that, in my lifetime, we can create a movement and effect real change in billions of people's lives around the world, particularly women and children who often bear the brunt of the lack of access to healthcare," Ms. Stryker said, according to the press release.
