Mayo Clinic cuts ties with Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center in Minnesota

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is severing ties with Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center in Wabasha, Minn., according to the Post Bulletin.

Mayo Clinic's decision to stop providing primary care services in Wabasha came after numerous conversations with St. Elizabeth's leaders, but ultimately Mayo attributed withdrawing its services to "a changing healthcare environment across the country," according to the Post Bulletin, which cited a news release.

Since Mayo Clinic is the sole provider of primary care services in Wabasha, St. Elizabeth's announced plans to establish a new primary care clinic next month.

Mayo Clinic will continue offering primary care services in Wabasha until the end of September.

"The shift in the care model along with primary care provider shortages challenged our ability to continue to provide medical staff to St. Elizabeth's as we have historically," Brian Whited, MD, CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System locations in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing, Minn., said in a statement to the Post Bulletin. "Both our clinic and St. Elizabeth's also began further integrating within their respective systems, which posed additional challenges related to differences in standardized care protocols, equipment and electronic health records. These challenges impact our ability to offer patients the continuity of care they deserve."

St. Elizabeth's is part of St. Louis-based Ascension's Ministry Health Care, a network of hospitals, clinics and other healthcare organizations in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
