Last OB-GYN practice closes in Lea County

Hobbs, N.M.-based Premier OB-GYN announced Wednesday it will close immediately due to ongoing issues with the administration of its affiliated hospital, Lea Regional Medical Center in Hobbs, according to NewsWest 9.

Premier is the county's only OB-GYN practice and serves roughly 15, 300 patients, the practice's administrator, Elias Said, MD, told NewsWest 9. The practice will continue to treat patient emergencies and deliver babies for the next 30 days, according to the report.

The hospital responded to the decision Premier physician Kathleen Callaghan, MD, made to close the practice in a statement: "Lea Regional Medical Center understands that local access to gynecologic and obstetric services is important for our community and we are committed to providing women with safe, quality care. We enjoy positive working relationships with our hospital's physician leaders and other medical staff members and are unaware of any concerns related to Dr. Kathleen Callaghan. Our team is as surprised as everyone else by Dr. Callaghan's abrupt closure of her practice. We have immediately worked to secure the services of other OB-GYNs to provide care in light of Dr. Callaghan's decision to cease care for her Hobbs patients."

Premier OB-GYN is currently in the process of negotiating relationships with other hospitals, according to the report.
