Kern Medical Center Physician Residents Rally for Higher Pay

Physician residents at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif., rallied outside the hospital Tuesday against low pay and canceled labor negotiations, according to a report by The Bakersfield Californian.

According to the Committee of Interns and Residents SEIU Healthcare, residents at KMC are the lowest paid residents in the nation, The Bakersfield Californian reported. Residents and the union requested a 15 percent raise in the spring, but KMC has not come back with a counterproposal and has cancelled negotiation meetings, according to the report. The residents last got a raise in 2008.

KMC is owned and operated by the County of Kern. The Kern County Administrative Office sent a statement to KBAK/KBFX, saying negotiators from the county are still working toward an agreement with KMC residents' representatives and that the county recognizes "the need to compensate KMC residents fairly."
