How do physicians like to unwind?

Physicians are busy people, but how do they spend their time when they leave the exam room?

They spend their time on the following hobbies, according to an AMA Insurance survey of nearly 5,000 physicians ages 30 to 69.

  • Physicians of all ages like to exercise. Running or jogging were most popular among the younger set: about 50 percent of respondents under age 40 run or jog, the most popular types of exercise in that age group.
  • Running and jogging were slightly less popular among physicians aged 40 to 59 (36 percent), who also enjoy bicycling (35 percent) and camping or hiking (24 percent).
  • Roughly 50 percent of physicians older than 60 walk to stay healthy.
  • Most physicians (58 percent) are well-read; the most respondents in all age groups ranked avid book reading as a regular hobby.
  • 46 percent are interested gourmet cooking.
  • 46 percent enjoy watching cable TV and 41 percent watch TV sports.
  • More physicians own dogs (39 percent) than cats (20 percent).
