Hospitals Buying Physicians: 13 Recent Transactions

The following transactions or developments between hospitals and physician groups took place within the past month, beginning with the most recent.

1. St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix Strikes Co-Management Agreement for Neurology
St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix created a co-management company with Barrow Neurological Institute. Barrow is now 75-percent owned by the physicians and 25-percent owned by St. Joseph's. As a for-profit and limited-liability company, it will cover all of the neurology groups at St. Joseph's, including the hospital's employed physician group, Barrow Neurology Clinics.

2. Detroit Medical Center Replaces Local Radiology Group
The Detroit Medical Center replaced its local radiology group with one based in California. The eight-hospital system was formerly affiliated with the Reynolds Group, which is composed of Wayne State University School of Medicine and private DMC physicians. Now, effective Jan. 1, Santa Monica-based Imaging Advantage will provide radiology services at DMC for five years.

3. Ohio's Southwest Regional Strikes Service Line Agreements With Christ Hospital
Southwest Regional Medical Center in Georgetown, Ohio — formerly Brown County General Hospital — formed an affiliation with The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. As part of the affiliation, cardiologists within the Ohio Heart and Vascular Center — the cardiology practice of The Christ Hospital — will begin treating patients at SRMC Jan. 18.

4. Memorial Hermann Acquires Richmond Bone & Joint in Texas
Memorial Hermann Medical Group acquired Richmond (Texas) Bone & Joint Clinic, bringing more than 15 physicians into the Houston-based health system. The clinic will be renamed Richmond Bone & Joint Clinic at Memorial Hermann. It was already part of Memorial Hermann's health information exchange — the first HIE of its kind in Houston.

5. Berkshire Health in Massachusetts Merges With Pediatric Group
Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Health Systems affiliated with MACONY Pediatrics, based in Great Barrington, Mass. The merger, which was effective Jan. 1., brings MACONY's three physicians and one physician assistant to Berkshire's Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington.

6. DeKalb Health in Indiana Merges With Family Practice Associates
Auburn, Ind.-based DeKalb Health has announced it fully integrated Family Practice Associates, also based in Auburn, into its DeKalb Health Medical Group.

7. Wellmont Health System in Tennessee Acquires Blue Ridge Medical Specialists
Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health System acquired Blue Ridge Medical Specialists. Blue Ridge specializes in oncology, pulmonology and endocrinology. The merger, which took effect Jan. 1, brings the practice's 11 physicians and staff members into the Wellmont system.

8. Highmark Affiliates With 60-Physician Medical Group
Pittsburgh-based Highmark, an insurer, formed an affiliation with Premier Medical Associates — the largest multi-specialty physician group in the Pittsburgh area. The physician group is also one of only 11 practices in Pennsylvania to be selected as a pilot for the national medical home model.

9. CaroMont Health Acquires Mid Carolina Cardiology From Novant
Gastonia, N.C.-based CaroMont Health acquired the Gastonia branch of Mid Carolina Cardiology, previously part of Novant Health. The cardiology practice includes a main location in Gastonia and four satellite offices and will become the sixth office affiliated with CaroMont Heart.

10. Kansas' Memorial Health System Acquires Family Practice Clinic
Memorial Health System in Abilene, Kan., acquired Abilene Family Physicians, effective Dec. 30. The health system acquired the clinic and its equipment and furnishings for $581,845 in addition to the clinic's accounts receivable, office supplies, medical supplies and injectibles at the fair market value.

11. Colorado's Middle Park Medical Center to Acquire North Park Medical Clinic
Middle Park Medical Center in Kremmling, Colo., part of Kremmling Memorial Hospital District, is finalizing a deal to lease North Park Medical Clinic in Walden, Colo. The district is expected to enter into a five-year lease. The building's other tenets -- North Park Physical Therapy, Jackson County Social Services and Jackson County Mental Health -- will remain in the building.

12. Maryland's Chester River, Shore Health Systems to Explore Partnership
Chester River Health System in Chestertown, Md., and Shore Health System in Easton, Md., entered into a joint agreement to explore "a regionalized approach" to providing health services to residents of a five-county area. An equal number of representatives from both systems will participate in a Regionalization Study Committee, which will study the challenges and opportunities of integrating clinical services and/or combining non-clinical and administrative services between the two systems.

13. Christus St. Vincent Partners With New Mexico Cancer Group
Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, N.M., entered into a five-year professional services agreement with New Mexico Cancer Center Associates and will close its cancer wing as part of the deal. The hospital currently only provides radiation treatments, and as part of the agreement, the hospital will pay the cancer clinic a fee to take over this service.
