Henry Ford physician hurt after stopping to help car crash victims dies

A Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System physician who was hit by an oncoming vehicle after stopping to help victims of an earlier car collision died Wednesday evening, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Cynthia Ray, MD, was reportedly on her way to work when she and a family of three stopped to help six individuals trapped in an overturned Jeep SUV Sunday morning. A second vehicle "pulled around the curve" and struck Dr. Ray and 17-year-old Sean English, according to the report.

Dr. Ray was a pulmonary disease and critical care physician at Detroit-based Henry Ford Hospital since 2005. Hospital officials told the Detroit Free Press Dr. Ray was also a "former ballerina, a gifted singer, great cook and accomplished dogsledder," according to the report.

Officials said her funeral will be held in Plymouth, Mich., Saturday. Donations in Dr. Ray's memory may also be made to the Dr. Cynthia Ray Patient Rescue Fund at Henry Ford Hospital, according to the report.
