Gwinnett Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program to Open in 2014

Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Gwinnett Medical Center's Graduate Medical Education Program's family medicine residency program will welcome its first class of residents in June 2014.

Gwinnett's residency program recently received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association. The first class of residents could be as large as five.

"It's well documented that physicians remain in the community where they complete their residency; the greater north metro [area] stands to benefit from this program as it will help address the severe primary care physician shortage in Georgia," Phil Wolfe, president and CEO of GMC, said in a news release.

The residency program will focus on training physicians to deliver patient-centered care while remaining cost-conscious, according to the release. The program is affiliated with the Georgia Campus-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and The Georgia Regents University/The University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens.
