Florida Senate passes proposal to coordinate mental health with primary care

Florida lawmakers are considering proposals to coordinate mental health and substance abuse services with primary care, change how the services are administered and increase Medicaid funding for them, according to CBS Miami.

A proposal was passed Wednesday by the Florida Senate Appropriations Committee and two Florida House panels launched similar proposals, according to the report.

"The bill will lead to more continuity and less fragmentation of services," Senate Health and Human Services Appropriations Chairman Rene Garcia, said in a statement. "People suffering from mental illness and substance abuse will receive more effective treatment, and the service delivery system will be more accountable to the taxpayers who fund these important efforts."

The proposals will also require the managing entities that regionally administer substance abuse and mental health services to bid on performance-based, coordinated care contracts with the Department of Children and Families, according to the report.
