Florida Hospitals to Receive $80M in Supplemental GME Payments

Through the new Statewide Residency Program, hospitals in Florida that support residents are eligible to receive a piece of an $80 million appropriation as a supplemental payment for graduate medical education, according to the Florida governor's website.

"This program is the first of its kind to coordinate with hospitals on supporting their medical education programs and will ensure we keep more of our medical school graduates here in the Sunshine State," Gov. Rick Scott said, according to the report.

"By raising awareness and allocating appropriate resources…to train the state's future physicians and medical personnel, Florida will be in a far better position to address our looming demand for doctors and ensure all of our citizens have access to high-quality care," Jim Burkhart, CEO of Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital, said in the report.

Many physicians choose to practice in the state where they completed their graduate medical education: according to the Association of American Medical Colleges' 2013 State Physician Workforce Data Book, 47.4 physicians do so.
