Ensuring physician career satisfaction, organizational success

A successful future for the healthcare industry is predicated on both clinical performance and the ability of physicians to lead. In the face of continuous reformation and the evolution of the healthcare industry, physicians must prepare and position themselves as leaders and partners in changing the way care is delivered.

As the healthcare industry continues in its drive to focus on value-based care, collaboration between physicians and hospitals is becoming increasingly critical. Additionally, adaptability, innovation, business acumen, leadership and emotional intelligence are all of equal importance.

While overall morale and a positive outlook of the medical field have increased for physicians over the last few years (up from 32 percent in 2012 to 44 percent in 2013), unfortunately, many physicians today indicate strong concerns or dissatisfaction with certain elements of their profession. These commonly include feeling overextended in their workloads, poor evaluations of the healthcare reform law and the impacts on their practices, among other factors.

Time pressures, a perceived lack of control over practice decisions and feeling disconnected from colleagues additionally contribute to levels of physician dissatisfaction. However, addressing these issues can improve physician satisfaction while simultaneously improving patient care.

Addressing physician dissatisfaction is of the utmost importance for the healthcare industry and should be on every healthcare leader's agenda. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected growth of physicians and surgeons between 2012 and 2022 is 18 percent, 7 percent faster than the average growth rate for all occupations. Rapid job growth is expected to occur due to the aging population's increased demand for physician services and because healthcare-related industries are continuing to expand.
