Atlanta-based Emory University appointed Vikas P. Sukhatme, MD, dean of the medical school, effective Nov. 1.
Here are four things to know about Dr. Sukhatme.
1. Dr. Sukhatme serves as chief academic officer and Harvard faculty dean for academic programs at Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also serves as a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
2. He will succeed David S. Stephens, MD, who served as interim dean of the medical school during the year-long search for a permanent replacement.
3. Dr. Sukhatme was born in India and raised in Rome. He completed his bachelor's degree and doctor of science degree at Cambridge, Mass.-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
4. In addition to his work, Dr. Sukhatme cofounded several biotechnology companies and nonprofit organizations, including GlobalCures, which conducts clinical trials for cancer therapies.
