ECU Brody medical school physician group integrates with Vidant Health

ECU Physicians, the clinical practice of Greenville, N.C.-based East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, signed a formal agreement to integrate with Vidant Medical Group, the multispecialty physician services group belonging to Greenville-based Vidant Health.

The goal of the integration is to create innovative systems and processes to reduce costs for patients and increase their access to new therapies and technologies.

The merged entity's board will be chaired by Nicholas Benson, MD, interim dean for the Brody School of Medicine, and will include six representatives appointed by Vidant Health and five representatives named by the university.

Vidant Health will be responsible for the financial risks associated with the organization, but the integrated entity will be legally structured to operate in support of the medical school.

As part of the agreement, Vidant Health will pay the university an initial payment of $35 million, followed by an annual payment of $14.25 million to support the medical school's mission for the next 30-years.

The integrated entity will begin operating in 2018.
