Duke, North Carolina Central University to invest in joint medical research endeavors

Durham, N.C.-based Duke University and North Carolina Central University, also in Durham, will each put forth $1.9 million toward a joint collaboration to encourage medical research initiatives and teach students how to conduct clinical research, according to The Herald Sun.

The agreement, which officials from both institutions announced Sept. 15, will align Duke School of Medicine's Clinical & Translational Science Institute with NCCU's Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise.

The goal of the collaboration is to combine research initiatives at both facilities to improve drug development and understand the proliferation of certain diseases.

The universities also plan to create a degree-supplement certificate for NCCU students to gain experience conducting clinical research. While details regarding the program have not been released, a committee comprising Duke and NCCU representatives will plan the program's curriculum, the report states.

The institutions will also reportedly offer internships to select Duke students who earn the certificate.
