Couple gives $92M to Northwestern University's medical school

Evanston, Ill.-based Northwestern University announced a $92 million donation to its Chicago-based Feinberg School of Medicine for biomedical research, specifically for regenerative medicine, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Donated by 1958 Northwestern alumnus Louis Simpson and his wife, Kimberly Querrey, the money will go to the construction of a $400 million, 12-story biomedical research center, which will be named after the couple.

The research center will be built where the former Prentice Women's Hospital was located and will be connected to Lurie Medical Research Center. The space will be used for research in cancer, heart disease, neurogenerative disorders and genetics. Construction will begin later this year and is expected to finish in 2018, according to the report.

In addition to a previous $25 million donation for the university's Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine, Mr. Simpson and Ms. Querrey are the largest single donors in the school's ongoing fundraising campaign, which seeks $3.75 billion by 2018. Northwestern has raised $2.2 billion to date, with $1 billion for the medical school, according to the report.
