Cambia Health Aims to Curb Severe Palliative Care Shortage

Palliative care practitioners are in short supply: There is one provider for every 1,300 people living with serious or life-threatening illness, compared with one cardiologist for every 71 people experiencing a heart attack.

A new program from the Cambia Health Foundation is aiming to change that through a new program, the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program. The program will offer two-year, $180,000 grants to up to six scholars each year. The money will support research, clinical, educational or policy projects, according to a news release.

"This is a critically important effort. We want to promote and encourage the next generation of leaders in palliative care and shine a light on people who are making a difference in improving care for people with serious illness," Steven Pantilat, MD, director of the UCSF Palliative Care Program in San Francisco and chair of the Sojourns Scholar Advisory Committee, said in the release. "We hope this initiative will bring national visibility to their efforts and innovations."

Applications for the program will be accepted through March 10. Physicians and nurses are eligible to apply. Visit here for more information.
