Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Heart Institute affiliate: 3 things to know

Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Heart Institute, both in Houston, have announced a formal affiliation agreement between the two institutions and Houston-based Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.

Here are three things to know about the agreement.

1. The agreement is focused on cardiovascular research, education and patient care.

2. The objective of the agreement is "to build on the expertise and synergies" of Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Heart Institute, with a unified leadership team, according to a news release. The two institutions are jointly recruiting a CEO for Texas Heart Institute who will also serve in a cardiovascular leadership role at Baylor College of Medicine.

3. Under the agreement, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Heart Institute will work together on a number of cardiovascular issues, such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis and ischemia, heart failure and cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias and channelopathies, congenital developmental heart disease, aortopathies, valvular heart disease, cardiovascular regenerative medicine, heart assist devices, stem cell research and genetics. Houston-based CHI St. Luke’s Health, including Baylor St. Luke's MedicalCenter, will be an important partner in the clinical efforts, according to a news release.
