Avalanche kills 2 Massachusetts General Hospital physicians in Canada

Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed two of its physicians were killed in an avalanche in Canada earlier this month, according to The Boston Globe.

The two victims — Victor Fedorov, MD, PhD, and Lauren Zeitels, MD, PhD — were reportedly buried in an avalanche while snowshoeing in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, March 12, according to the report. Both were second-year students in the hospital's internal medicine residency program.

Officials said Dr. Fedorov and Dr. Zeitels were seasoned outdoor enthusiasts and had reportedly taken every safety precaution for their trip.

Dr. Fedorov was born in Moscow, Russia, and grew up in Virginia. He received his medical and doctoral degrees at New York City-based Weill Cornell Medical College and completed his doctoral research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, also in New York City, according to the report.

Dr. Zeitels earned her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the Pittsburgh-based University of Pennsylvania and received her master's degree from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. She completed her medical and doctoral degrees at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, according to the report.

Officials said the facility will hold memorial services for the two individuals and have created donation funds in the names of both victims.
