AMA: 4 Guidelines for Reimbursement of Physician-Led Team-Based Care

As the physician-led, team-based model of healthcare delivery continues to spread, the question of how these teams should be reimbursed has yet to be settled. But to further the conversation, the American Medical Association recently adopted recommendations for creating payment models that support team-based healthcare delivery.

According to the AMA recommendations, physician leaders in a team-based model should receive payments for services provided by the team and then establish disbursement methods. The disbursement methods should be based on team members' contributions to the team and factors such as volume or intensity of care provided, their training and experience and the quality of care provided.

Additionally, the AMA says payment systems for team-based care should do the following, according to a news release:

•    Reflect the value provided by the team
•    Reflect the time, effort and intellectual capital provided by team members
•    Be adequate to attract the best team members available
•    Be sufficient to sustain the team
