AMA: 3 Steps for Physicians in New Payment Models

Both employed and independent physicians are beginning to take steps to prepare for pay-for-performance and value-based purchasing models. A recent American Medical News report discusses three steps for physician leaders to take when preparing for new payment models.

  1. Know what's being measured. Physicians should know the details about how quality and cost of care will be measured. For instance, they should know if the assessment of the practice will be based on insurance claims data or an audit of medical records.
  2. Figure out how to meet quality standards. Physicians need to figure out how to meet quality and efficiency standards of payors and health systems. This may involve setting up an internal monitoring system within the practice to ensure standards and quality metrics are being addressed.
  3. Ensure practices have the necessary tools. Physician practices may bring on case managers or hire third-parties to bring in personnel to help offices manage value-based payment changes.
