Aetna, Oncology Group Partner for Cancer-Specific PCMH

Health insurer Aetna has partnered with Consultants in Medical Oncology and Hematology, an independent oncology and hematology practice with four locations around the Philadelphia area, to launch a patient-centered medical home model for oncology.

The model includes using evidence-based decision support, enhanced personalized services and a realigned payment structure. CMOH will receive money for expanded services it will provide to commercial Aetna members and Aetna coordinated CMOH's access to an evidence-based decision support tool to reduce variability in cancer care.

CMOH was the first oncology practice to be recognized as a patient-centered medical home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance in 2010.

"Given the frequency of contact, oncologists are in a prime position to help their patients navigate the healthcare system to get appropriate and aligned treatment for all of their conditions," Michael Kolodziej, MD, Aetna's national medical director for oncology strategies, said in the news release. "Helping a patient coordinate care for an underlying heart condition while being treated for prostate cancer is the right thing to do."
