Abington Memorial to Become Drexel College of Medicine Regional Campus

Abington (Pa.) Memorial Hospital will become a regional medical campus for the Drexel University College of Medicine, expanding the organizations' academic affiliation.

As a medical campus, Abington Memorial will be an alternative venue where third- and fourth year medical students can gain clinical education. Drexel medical students can complete their required clinical rotations at Abington Memorial, and Abington will host  two years of training in areas such as surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, neurology and psychiatry.

"While healthcare is shifting to more care being provided in the outpatient setting, the Drexel medical students will benefit from rotating through ambulatory settings such as our large employed primary care network, Abington Health Physicians," John Kelly, MD, chief of staff at Abington Memorial Hospital, said in the news release.

The new designation is effective July 2014. The two organizations have had an affiliation agreement since 2004.
