8% of Wisconsin physicians behind in CME

An audit by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services revealed almost one in 11 of the state's licensed physicians are not up-to-date with continuing education requirements, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

However, Wisconsin has the most lax requirements for continuing medical education in the country, requiring 30 hours of CME credit every two years, according to the report. This is incredibly low compared to neighboring states Michigan and Illinois, where 150 credit hours are required every three years.

A new rule effective June 1 mandates biennial audits of Wisconsin physicians for CME compliance. The audit randomly selected 1,135 physicians and found 8.3 percent could not prove CME compliance for the 2011-13 licensing period, according to the report.

A portion of the noncompliant physicians did not respond or submitted CME credits for the wrong time period, according to the report.
