6 Hospitals, Health Systems That Recently Announced, Opened New Residency Programs

With the physician shortage looming nationwide, several hospitals and health systems have opened or have announced plans to open residency programs. Residency programs can help combat the physician shortage in the organizations' area, as residents are likely to set up practice in their training area.

The following six hospitals or health systems either opened new residency programs this summer or have recently announced plans to open programs in the near future. They are listed alphabetically by system name. (Note: No. 3 includes two health systems.)

1. Allegiance Health in Jackson, Mich., welcomed residents this summer in four new residency programs: emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery and traditional internship, a program for residents who have not yet decided on a specialty.

2. Kennewick (Wash.) General Hospital opened two new residency programs this summer, in internal medicine and family medicine.

3. St. Mary's Health System in Athens, Ga., and Gwinnett Medical System in Lawrenceville, Ga., both recently received funds from the University System of Georgia to help start residency programs.

4. Hudson, Fla.-based Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point will start an internal medicine residency program in July 2014.

5. The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio started an emergency medicine residency program.
