3 Key Areas of Strategic Benefit From Co-Management Arrangements, Surgical Integration

Hospitals looking to align with physicians don't necessarily have to employ them to do so, according to Gerald Biala, senior vice president of perioperative services at Surgical Care Affiliates. They can instead turn to co-management arrangements.

"It can lead to pathways for ACOs and other healthcare reform strategies, as well as get physicians involved," he said.

At the Becker's Hospital Review 5th Annual Meeting in Chicago on May 15, Mr. Biala and Hillary Rosenfeld, SCA's director of perioperative services, discussed how co-management arrangements between hospitals and physicians can improve care across the surgical continuum. They identified the following three areas of strategic benefit from surgical integration achieved through co-management arrangements.

1. Value delivery. Surgical integration through a co-management agreement will make physicians more inclined to enact operational and quality improvements for other patients. Integration will also simplify surgical coordination for physicians, and the total cost of care will go down, Ms. Rosenfeld said.

2. Patient experience. Surgical integration strengthens the link between the hospital and post-acute care, and patients will appreciate a more seamless care network. "It really affords consistency among your surgical outcomes, and it provides a better patient experience," Ms. Rosenfeld said.

3. Payer essentiality. Surgical integration through co-management arrangements transforms hospitals into good partners for bundled payments, ACOs, self-insured entities and narrow network arrangements. They can also segue into commercial payer partnerships, Ms. Rosenfeld said. "Providers and payers are starting to come together and really make some very high-level transformations in how we do things as surgical care providers," she said.
