3.1M Texans do not have access to a psychiatrist

Texas currently faces a severe shortage of physicians, according to a new study from Merritt Hawkins and the North Texas Regional Extension Center.

The study reveals a county-by-county breakdown of the physician shortage. It shows that 185 out of 254 counties do not have a general psychiatrist, which means 3.1 million Texans live in counties without psychiatrists. Counties lacked other specialists too: 158 had no general surgeon and 147 had no obstetrician or gynecologist.

Texas needs more than 12,800 more physicians to meet the national per capita average, and physicians are needed in both rural and urban areas. The state ranks 41st in the country for its ratio of physicians per 100,000 citizens.
