18-physician cardiology group to close due to industry pressures

Williamsville, N.Y.-based Buffalo Cardiology and Pulmonary Associates is closing its doors May 20 "after exhausting our efforts to overcome challenges that have arisen," according to a notice on its website.

"As we assessed the challenges of changing healthcare over the last few years, the physicians believe that they can better serve you in new, dynamic ways. This is best accomplished by moving from our current structure," reads the notice, penned by the group's president, Robert Gatewood Jr., MD.

The Buffalo Cardiology and Pulmonary Associates website shows where 15 of its 18 physicians plan to transfer their practice. Nine of the physicians will shift to Buffalo Medical Group, which has locations in Williamsville and Orchard Park, N.Y., and more than 100 providers across a host of specialties. The other physicians who have indicated where they plan to transfer will be split between the Williamsville practices of CSS Healthcare, Great Lakes Cardiovascular and UBMD Physicians Group, as well as Buffalo, N.Y.-based Mercy Comprehensive Care.

Along with the closure of the 40-year-old practice come layoffs of approximately 83 individuals, according to a Buffalo Business First report. Most support staff will transition to local practices along with many of the physicians.

"We realize that change is sometimes unnerving, but all the doctors remain committed to your present and future care," Dr. Gatewood said in the statement. "We are excited about the future."
