Westchester Medical Center Nurses in New York Declare Impasse

Registered nurses at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., have declared a deadlock in their contract talks with hospital management, according to a New York State Nurses Association release.

The nurses' most recent five-year contract expired on March 31. According to the release, the nurses and hospital administration have been unable to strike an accord on benefits, staffing levels and other issues.

The declaration of impasse was filed this morning with the New York State Public Employment Relations Board. Under the Taylor Law, which governs collective bargaining for public employees in New York, PERB may require the parties to meet with a mediator for up to three sessions.

Last week, unionized nurses at Westchester Medical Center rallied against proposed layoffs and cuts announced by hospital leaders in late October.
