Nurses Rally Against Proposed Layoffs at Westchester Medical Center in New York

Unionized nurses at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., rallied yesterday against proposed layoffs and cuts that were announced in late October, according to a Civil Service Employees Association release.

In late October, Westchester Medical Center officials announced more job and program cuts are on the horizon as the hospital faces decreasing Medicaid reimbursements and high pension costs. According to the release, the hospital is considering laying off approximately 650 employees and has already shuttered the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program.

CSEA Westchester Medical Center members rallied against the cuts, arguing such moves would be detrimental to patient safety and access to healthcare. The group has also been critical of the hospital's top-level management for not disclosing all financial records, such as executive compensation and program budgets.
