University of Arizona to Open Cancer Center at St. Joseph's Hospital

The University of Arizona's Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson has announced plans to open a new cancer center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, according to an Arizona Republic report.

The inpatient center is scheduled to open this summer and is expected to include 30 beds with the ability to expand to 60.

Arizona Cancer Center is also working to develop a large outpatient cancer center at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix, according to the report.

Arizona Cancer Center faces some increasingly tough competition. Banner Health will open a cancer center through a partnership with University of Texas-MD Anderson Cancer Center at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona, and the Mayo Clinic is currently building a proton-beam-therapy center at its Mayo Clinic Arizona in Phoenix. Cancer Center Treatment Centers of America, which has a location in Goodyear, Ariz., recently acquired additional land near its facility with plans to expand, according to the report.
