St. Mary to officially become short-stay hospital: 5 things to know

Beginning Sept. 1, CHRISTUS SOUTHEAST TEXAS St. Mary, a 227-bed acute care hospital in Port Arthur, will officially become a short-stay hospital.

Here are five things to know about the transition.

1. St. Mary will offer the following services.

  • Outpatient surgery
  • Short-stay inpatient surgeries
  • Outpatient services
  • Outpatient diagnostic/low-risk interventional catheterizations
  • Endoscopy services
  • Radiology/imaging
  • Emergency department
  • Outpatient chemotherapy and infusion services
  • Laboratory services

2. Although CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System defines short-stay as surgeries that require discharge the same or next day, St. Mary will still be able to care for patients who require a lengthier stay for surgeries such as joint replacements, according to a report published by KFDM.

3. As a part of this transition, St. Mary will consolidate the following inpatient services to CHRISTUS SOUTHEAST TEXAS St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont: obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, pediatric, cardiovascular and general medicine inpatient services. Effective Aug. 26, patients will no longer be admitted to St. Mary for the inpatient services transitioning to St. Elizabeth. More than 104 associates at St. Mary have accepted open positions at St. Elizabeth.

4. Additionally, during the month of September, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System will roll out a community-based transportation shuttle service to transport patients between the St. Mary and St. Elizabeth facilities and campuses, according to the report published by KFDM.

5. The transition is part of CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System's regionwide transformation. By 2018, the health system will increase its service offerings from 27 locations to more than 40 locations, adding access to urgent care centers, outpatient clinics, primary care practices and specialty care.
