Singing River Health System board member removed

Despite his resolve to retain membership, the newest member of Pascagoula, Miss.-based Singing River Health System's board was voted off Monday by county supervisors, according to a local news report from WLOX.

The trustee in question, Clarence Dubose, made his case before the Jackson County Board of Supervisors to no avail. The vote was 4-1 to remove him due to potential conflicts of interest, according to the report. Mr. Dubose owns a nearby pharmacy and hospice.

This marks the second rejected appointment this year proposed by Board of Supervisors President Melton Harris Jr., according to a report from the Sun Herald. Mr. Harris told WLOX he believed the decision was based on race.

Mr. Dubose chalked it up to a rigid culture. "I think it's more of a fear factor more than anything else. When something isn't like what you're accustomed to seeing, then the caution flag comes up and that's what I see these people having dealt with today," Mr. Dubose told WLOX. He also said he plans to bring the issue to state legislators, according to the report.
