Poll: Public support of ACA at record high

As congressional Republicans mull over strategies for repealing and replacing the ACA, public support of former President Barack Obama's signature health reform law has never been higher, according to a poll released Feb. 23 by Pew Research Center.

Over half of Americans (54 percent) approve of the ACA, while 43 percent disapprove, according to the survey, which was conducted among 1,503 adults between Feb. 7 and Feb. 12.

Since the ACA's implementation, the public's opinion on the law has been largely negative. Yet as recently as December, about an even proportion of Americans approved and disapproved of the law, at 48 percent and 47 percent, respectively.

The latest survey shows more critics of the ACA now want Republican lawmakers to focus on modifying the law, rather than repealing it. While about 25 percent of respondents who disapprove of the law want to see it amended, 17 percent want to see it repealed entirely.

Sentiment on the ACA is deeply partisan, with 85 percent of Democrats expressing approval. About half of independents (53 percent) approve of the law, while just 10 percent of Republicans approve.
