National panel of judges named for 2017 Hearst Health Prize

Hearst Health, a division of media company Hearst and the Jefferson College of Population Health at Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University, has named the national panel of judges for the 2017 Hearst Health Prize.

Launched in 2015, the Hearst Health Prize is an annual $100,000 cash award given in recognition of an organization's or an individual's outstanding achievement in managing or improving health in the U.S.

The interdisciplinary judging panel includes several returning judges from last year's competition, as well as notable additions. The nine judges for the 2017 Hearst Health Prize include:

  • A. Mark Fendrick, MD, director of the Value-Based Insurance Design Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., a professor of internal medicine at Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan School of Medicine, and a professor of Health Management & Policy at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.
  • Tine Hansen-Turton, COO of Philadelphia-based Public Health Management Corporation, founding executive director for Philadelphia-based Convenient Care Association and CEO of Philadelphia-based National Nursing Centers Consortium.
  • H. Stephen Lieber, president and CEO of Chicago-based HIMSS. 
  • Ron Loeppke, MD, vice-chairman of U.S. Preventive Medicine.
  • David B. Nash, MD, founding dean of Philadelphia-based Jefferson College of Population Health.
  • Valinda Rutledge, vice president of Public Payor Health Strategy in the Care Coordination Institute at Greenville (S.C.) Healthcare System
  • James M. Schibanoff, MD, consultant to Hearst Health and former editor-in-chief of the Milliman Care Guidelines.
  • Lisa Simpson, CEO of Washington, D.C.-based AcademyHealth.
  • Mark D. Smith, MD, founding president of the California HealthCare Foundation and a professor of clinical medicine at the University of California San Francisco.
